What to Do If Your Car Breaks Down on the Highway
Who Do You Call?
The first call you should make is to the 911. Call this number immediately, tell them where your car is located, where you are located, and what the situation is. After that, call AAA or any other road club that you belong to, so that you can get your car towed as soon as possible.
Should You Get Out?
The biggest question that drivers face is whether or not to get out of a car once it has stopped working.
You should get out of the car immediately. Make your way towards the side of the road, and step over the guardrail if the car is in the far right hand side of the highway.
Why Not Stay In the Car?
The problem with staying in car that has broken down in a lane is that oncoming cars might not notice that your car has stalled. You can put your hazards on, but this may not be enough of a warning if a person is driving quickly and does not have enough time to realize that your car has stopped completely. The danger with being inside of your car is that you may be hit by another vehicle, and this could cause serious damage in addition to a multi car pile up.
How to Place Warning Signals?
Once stopped, use any warning signals that you have—flares, hazard triangle, or a warning light—to alert other motorists of your vehicle's presence.
If it’s daylight, put on your emergency blinkers to alert oncoming traffic to the fact that your vehicle isn’t moving. This is not a good idea at night because motorists coming up behind you may think that your vehicle is still rolling along the highway and run right into the rear end of your car.
If it’s nighttime and you’re not stuck in traffic, quickly place warning lights or reflective markers about six feet behind the vehicle to alert traffic, and then get back in the car. If you don’t have lights or markers, either turn on the interior lights manually or leave the car door that’s away from traffic open so that the interior lights stay on.

× expressway：很多人翻译成expressway， 这一说法确实存在，但它是美国英语的用法，指的是城市内的快速干道，其英语释义如下：a very wide road, usually in a city, on which cars can travel very quickly without stopping。
《朗文当代英语辞典》对其的解释十分简明扼要，它就是指公路，尤其使用于美国英语中，其英文释义为 a broad main road that joins one town to another。
√ motorway:这个单词则似乎更加对应我国的连接城市与城市，地区与地区的高速公路，因为《朗文当代英语辞典》对其下的定义是：a very wide road for traveling fast over long distances, especially between cities。
